چکیده

In two experiments, the active haptic identification of three-dimensional mathematically well-defined objects is investigated. The objects, quadric surfaces, are defined in terms of the shape index, a quantity describing the shape, and curvedness, a quantity describing overall curvature. Both shape index and curvedness are found to have a significant influence on haptic shape identification. Concave surfaces lead to a larger spread in responses than convex ones. Hyperbolic surfaces show a slight tendency to be identified with more difficulty than elliptic ones. Surfaces with a high curvedness are identified more easily than those with a low curvedness. Results from experiments with constant and with random curvedness are indistinguishable. It is concluded that shape index and curvedness are psychophysically not confounded.

The influence of stimulus tilt on haptic curvature matching and discrimination by dynamic touch.

We investigated whether haptic comparison of the curvature of strips is influenced by the tilt (the average slope relative to the horizontal) of the curved strips. This particular stimulus manipulation was chosen to decide between two broad ways in which dynamic curvature comparison might be done: on the basis of the attitude (slope) differences over the surfaces or on the basis of the attitude...

Generation of Point-contact State Space between Strictly Curved Objects

Isolated point contacts are most common between two curved objects that do not have line segment on their surfaces. This paper addresses how to represent concisely and generate automatically graphs of topological contact states made of isolated contact points between such curved objects. Information of contact states is useful for a wide range of applications, from robotic tasks involving compl...

Tracking minimum distances between curved objects with parametric surfaces in real time

This paper presents a new algorithm for real-time tracking of pairs of closest points as well as their corresponding surface features between certain general types of objects (which can be non-convex) with parametric curved surfaces. The fact that the algorithm works directly on accurate parametric descriptions of curved surfaces rather than polygonal approximation of surfaces (i.e., polygonal ...
